Integral sanitation of the Ria del Eo
Wastewater treatment station and sewage systems belonging to the Network of Collectors that allow the collection and transport to the treatment plant in two phases: in the first, those belonging to Castropol and, in the second, those of Figueras and Vegadeo.
This estuary lies on the border between Galicia and Asturias and is formed at the mouth of the River Eo. It is about 10 km long and about 14 km2 in length. The action consists of the complete restoration of the Asturian margin of the River Eo, which forms the western limit of the Asturian coastal strip. Due to the great importance and complexity of the action, it was implemented in phases. The first relates to the Wastewater Treatment Station and then to the sanitation systems for the Collector Network, which allow for the collection and transport to the treatment plant, which were developed in two parts due to their large size. In the first, the systems of the urban centre of Castropol are carried out, and in the second, those of Figueras and Vegadeo. The action is designed to serve a population of 18,000 equivalent inhabitants. The aim of the action is to preserve the environmental values of the estuary, to protect the quality of water, shellfish areas and their tourist value. These works will make it possible to prevent waste water from being discharged directly into the estuary and the coastal strip of the municipality of Castropol. The resident population will benefit from the action in a direct way, extending the benefits to tourists who come throughout the year to enjoy this natural environment. Environmental values are also promoted in the estuary, which hosts some 3,000 waterfowl during the winter period.
