Fund for Integrated Border Management

The Instrument for Border and Visa Management (IGFV) aims to ensure the development and implementation of a sound and effective integrated European management of external borders that contributes to strengthening the level of internal security in the Union, safeguarding the free movement of persons within the Union.

Objectives

For the period 2021-2027, Community legislation sets two specific objectives (OE) for the IGFV.

  1. SO1

Integrated European Border Management: support for effective management at the external borders by the European Border and Coast Guard and the national authorities responsible for border management, in order to facilitate legitimate crossing, prevent and detect illegal immigration and cross-border crime and effectively manage migration flows, by connecting to centralised external systems

  2. SO2

Common visa policy: ensuring a harmonised approach to issuing visas and facilitating legitimate travel, helping to prevent migration and security risks through applications such as the Visa Information System (VIS) to improve the effectiveness of Schengen visa management, strengthen the quality of the service and provide the citizen with a smooth and quality service.

The financial support provided by the IGFV from the Union budget is managed jointly by the European Commission and the Member States through programmes of the Member States, as well as through a thematic mechanism to address priorities that have high added value for the EU or respond to urgent needs – the allocation of which may be managed under shared management, directly or indirectly.
