Melilla has a rich historical, architectural and cultural heritage of great importance and potential as a factor of local development.
Within this area of activity, the rehabilitation works of the Chapel of Santiago and the Coat of Arms of Emperor Charles V have been selected as examples of good practice.
The Chapel of Santiago, despite its small size, is considered an architectural gem as it is the only chapel built in Gothic style in Africa. The Chapel of Santiago showed a
significant deterioration as a result of inadequate ventilation which causes biological agents to concentrate on the top, causing damage to the elements

The Coat of Arms of Emperor Charles V highlights the importance of Melilla, over the centuries, as a strategic location, because of its natural harbour on the North African coast, which led to the construction of defensive fortifications, which today are known as “Melilla la Vieja”.
